New School High School (NSHS) is a small, non-sectarian, private high school located in Tinton Falls, NJ. At NSHS we believe students learn best when they are given the freedom and responsibility to pursue their own interests. Our curriculum is based on student-initiated projects, community service, student-selected college courses, and internships. Each year, we develop an overarching theme as a starting point for our students. The 2000-2001 theme, for example, was the question: "what does it mean to be human?" At the beginning of the year, we challenge our students to develop a framework for learning about the theme. When the overall plan is established, the students complete a series of projects incorporating their personal interest with an aspect of the theme. Traditional academic disciplines (i.e. math, science, history, and English) are integrated into each project. Because we value social cooperation, we expect our students to utilize each other in their projects. We do not have tests at NSHS and do not believe in competitive class rankings. Instead, when projects are completed, students are required to share their findings with all students and teachers.
New School HS does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, or religion in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, employment policies, scholarship and loan programs, athletic programs and other school administered programs and activities.
"The things that motivate me most (at NSHS) are: the
trust the teachers have in students, the knowledge and experience they bring to
class each day, the freedom they give to explore different personal interests,
and the hands-on knowledge they encourage students to seek."
Mike, Class of 2002
"Learning is experiencing. To learn something, you
must teach yourself. Each experience teaches you whether or not to do
something ..."
Evan, Class of 2001
"Education should be more than beating other students on
standardized test."
Ally, Class of 2004
